Portable Gaming Devices for Travel: A Practical Comparison
Last updated:

The best travel device is the one that fits your luggage, games, charging access and tolerance for setup. A closed console, a Linux-based handheld PC and a Windows handheld can have similar screen sizes while behaving very differently offline.
Current reference models
| Device generation | Official size and weight | Storage and power context |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | 298 × 117 × 49 mm; about 640 g | 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe, microSD, 50 Wh battery, 45 W USB-C supply |
| ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) | 290 × 121 × 27.5–50.9 mm; 715 g | 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD, 80 Wh battery, Windows 11 |
| Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 | 8.8-inch generation with detachable controls | Configurations vary; Lenovo lists a 74 Wh battery and up to 2 TB SSD on current regional pages |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Closed console with detachable Joy-Con 2 controls | Internal storage plus supported microSD Express expansion; Nintendo controls software compatibility |
Valve’s battery estimate for Steam Deck OLED is 3–12 hours, an unusually wide range that reflects game load and settings. ASUS and Lenovo also publish battery claims under particular workloads. Treat all of them as test-condition ranges, not a promise for a flight.
Offline play is a software question
Local hardware does not guarantee offline access. Store sign-in, a first launch, anti-cheat, cloud saves or a publisher account may require a connection. Before travel, install updates, launch each game once in the intended offline mode and confirm that saves are stored locally. Cloud-only play has separate limits covered in our portable cloud-streaming guide.
Travel decision checklist
- Measure the device inside its protective case, including charger and cables.
- Check airline rules for lithium batteries and carry spares in hand luggage where required.
- Confirm the charger supports the destination voltage and use a certified plug adapter rather than an improvised converter.
- Estimate usable storage after the operating system and reserve space for updates.
- Choose controls and text size you can use comfortably in the seat or room available.
A gaming laptop offers a larger display and keyboard but changes the weight, charger and desk-space calculation. Compare named scenarios in portable consoles versus gaming laptops.
