“Defined modern console gaming” is an interpretation, not a measurable award. The useful approach is to identify what a game demonstrably shipped, then explain why its design or release strategy mattered without calling it the best ever.
Three documented examples
God of War Ragnarök
Santa Monica Studio’s sequel launched on PS4 and PS5 in November 2022 and later came to PC. Its cross-generation release shows how a flagship series can support an installed PS4 audience while using PS5 features such as faster loading and DualSense feedback. Editorially, its significance lies in combining a large narrative production with accessibility options and a franchise transition—not in permanent exclusivity.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Insomniac’s 2023 release was built for PS5, with rapid character switching and traversal presented around the console’s storage architecture. A later PC release means “PlayStation exclusive” should be time- and platform-qualified. Its role in the console library is better described through its release position and use of the hardware than unsupported sales superlatives.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Naughty Dog’s PS5 remaster added modes and technical options to a game originally released on PS4. It illustrates another PlayStation strategy: extending a major first-party work through remastering and later PC availability rather than creating a new console-only title.
How to discuss influence responsibly
- Separate original release date and platforms from later ports or remasters.
- Name a documented design or platform feature before offering an interpretation.
- Avoid turning critic scores, sales or awards into proof that every player will value a game.
- Distinguish a PlayStation Studios publisher relationship from permanent hardware exclusivity.
